The house

A place to arrive

Between deep, snow-laden forests the wind carries old songs through the trees. Here you find retreat, calm and a way of arriving again, and a silence that reaches the soul.

The main villa offers 86 m² for up to six guests. A soundproofed connecting door leads to the neighbouring villa: together they offer 172 m² and up to 12 guests. With the door closed, each villa keeps to itself.

Nights under the aurora

On clear, dark nights the northern lights dance above the roof. It is enough to step outside and look up.

Villa Lapland is at Rihmakuja 2 in Raattama (Kittilä). Ski trails and hiking paths start right at the house, and Mount Pallas stands on the horizon.

Arrival & Location

Where exactly is Villa Lapland located?

Villa Lapland is located in Raattama, a small village in Finnish Lapland, close to Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. The address is "Rihmakuja 2, FI-99340 Raattama".

 

Do I need a car?

Yes. Villa Lapland is best reached and enjoyed by car. Public transport in the area is limited and a car gives you the freedom to reach shops, ski tracks, restaurants and nature spots. You may want to check our arrival guide.

 

How far is the next supermarket?

A small supermarket is placed in Raattama, 5km away. The business hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 17. Saturday 10am to 12. Sunday closed

The next S-Market and K-Market are in Muonio, 40km away. Both are open all days, Monday to Friday 7am to 21. Saturday 8am to 20. Sunday 10am to 19.

 

Silence & Surroundings

How quiet is it?

Villa Lapland is very quiet. This is not city quiet, but it is real Lapland quiet. There are no busy roads, no urban background noise and no crowds passing by. For some guests, the silence may feel unfamiliar at first. After a while, it becomes part of your stay.

 

Is Villa Lapland suitable for parties?

No. Villa Lapland is designed for peaceful stays, nature, sauna, slow evenings and time together. It is not suitable for parties, events or any kind of commercial or loud gatherings.

 

Winter & Weather

Is winter driving difficult?
Finnish roads are well maintained, but winter conditions are real. Snow, ice and darkness are part of the experience. Winter tyres are mandatory in season, and careful driving is expected.

Can I see northern lights from the house?
Yes, when the sky is clear and aurora activity is present, northern lights may be visible from the property or nearby open areas. They are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed.

Sauna, Hot Tub & Fireplace

Is the sauna private?
The barrel sauna outside is shared between both houses.

Is firewood included?
Of course, firewood is included. If it runs empty, please give us a hint. We will take care to refill.

Do guests heat the hot tub themselves?
Yes. The hottub is self service. Please refer to th manual to prevent misuse and misoperation.

How many guests can stay?
Pro Einheit und gesamt klar trennen. Aktuell steht oben „12 guests“ und „2 bedrooms + sofa bed“ — das kann missverständlich werden, weil die Seite „two wooden holiday homes“ sagt. Ich würde sehr klar schreiben:

• one home: x guests
• both homes together: up to 12 guests

Sonst fragt sich der Gast: „Moment, zwei Schlafzimmer für 12 Leute?“

Is Wi-Fi available?
Ja, 300 Mbit/s laut Seite. Vielleicht ergänzen: remote location, Starlink/connection, usually stable, but nature/Lapland/weather etc. Wenn du keine Garantie geben willst: nicht zu absolut formulieren.

Are towels and bed linen included?
Ja, sehr wichtig. Das wollen Gäste wissen.

Food & Services

Are there restaurants nearby?
Ehrlich: eingeschränkt, Auto nötig, Selbstversorgung empfohlen.

Can I order food delivery?
Vermutlich nein. Das ist sogar wichtig und passt zum Konzept.

Should we bring groceries before arrival?
Ja. Das ist ein wichtiger Hinweis, besonders bei später Anreise.

Nature & Safety

Are there animals nearby?
Reindeer, hares, birds, maybe foxes, etc. Keine Panik machen, aber Natur ist Natur.

Can we walk into the forest?
Ja, aber im Winter mit Vernunft. Dunkelheit, Kälte, Orientierung.

Is the property suitable for children?
Da würde ich differenziert sein. Nicht „perfekt für Kinder“ schreiben, wenn Hot Tub, Sauna, Kamin, Schnee, Dunkelheit, Wildnis und keine Stadtinfrastruktur da sind. Eher:

Villa Lapland can be a beautiful place for families, but children must be supervised, especially around the sauna, hot tub, fireplace and outdoor areas in winter.

What are the check-in and check-out times?
Standard.

Are pets allowed?
Yes, pets are allowed at no extra charge. We kindly ask for registration.

Is smoking allowed?
Inside smoking is not allowed. Smoking is allowed outside; please use the trashbin provided and do not throw stumps into nature.

Is there parking?
Yes. There's four gratis parking lots on site.

Ski trails

The diverse network of trails runs through the "land of fells", so skiers must always take the conditions into account. Wind-blown snow or snowdrifts may cover a recently skied trail. The trails are mainly maintained with a trail tamper, but during the off-season a snowmobile-drawn trail grader is also used. In this case, traditional skiing is possible on the trails.

The ski trails are so-called circular runs, so you can start skiing from any point along the route. The starting point of the ski trails is the national park's P-area near the former Vuontispirtti. The starting point of the Sarvijärvi circuit is at Harrisaajo. The recommended direction of travel is counterclockwise, with the traditional track groove on the right side. Each named circuit is marked with its own color code and there is a km sign every kilometer, which tells you how much distance has been covered and how much is left.

Please note that the trail network also runs through private land in some parts. In addition, snowmobile riding is permitted on some sections, e.g. when reindeer herding requires it.

Trail map (all trails)
This link opens a real-time trail maintenance tracking system. The colors indicate when the trails were last maintained. You can also open the tracking system on your smartphone, which will show your location while skiing on the trail. This same tracking system has also been introduced in Levi and Ylläs as a paid service. Raattaman Reitit does not charge a fee for using the system. By purchasing a trail sticker and map, you support trail maintenance.

Ahovaara trail (3,7 km)
The trail rises to the top of Ahovaara, from which magnificent views open up to the entire fell range. There is also a lean-to (no tree maintenance) along the trail. Normal basic condition is sufficient for the route. You should be careful not to go too fast when descending! The trail is lit. The lighting is on from around 7:30 to 10 am and from 2 to 10 pm. The frost limit for lighting is approx. 20°C.

Raattama trail(18 km)
The trail goes through Yli-Kyrö, Raattama village and Harrisaajo. The terrain is easy, only at the village there is an ascent/descent. The section between the village and Harrisaajo is an open ridge, which you should be prepared for in windy weather. It is also worth considering the wind when choosing the direction of the route. At Harrisaajo, there is a lean-to next to the route (no tree maintenance). The trail is lit between Kyrö and Autto reindeer farm accommodation. The lighting is on from around 7:30 to 10 am and from 2 to 10 pm. The frost limit for lighting is approx. 20°C.

Vuontiskierros (7,3 km)
A gentle, flat, enjoyable trail around Lake Vuontisjärvi, suitable for everyone, with the exception of a few small climbs.

Hommakierros (4,2 km)
A short, easy loop around Lake Hommajärvi, with a lean-to on the shore (no tree maintenance). Suitable for all skiers.

Tynnyrikierros (9,1 km)
A nice route goes along the edge of the mountain, from where a stunning view of Lumikero opens up. From here the track turns around Tynnyrijärvi back to the starting point at the former Vuontispirtti. Suitable for all skiers, considering the length of the route.

Varkhaankierros (13,8 km)
The route has varying terrain, with a few short steep climbs/descents. There is a hut along the trail (forest management by the Finnish Forest Service). Normal basic fitness is sufficient, considering the length of the route.

Sarvijärvi trail (8 km)
The route is a side loop from the Raattama loop, from where the trail leads towards Sarvijärvi. The route has an ascent for the first couple of kilometers, which is rewarded with a brisk descent of a couple of kilometers back to the Raattama loop trail. About a couple of hundred meters from the halfway point of the route there is a stop at the Sarvijärvi hut (the Finnish Forest Service's wood supply).

Snowshoeing

From the villa, you may step straight into silence – strap on your snowshoes and follow the gentle path that leads towards the peaks of Pallas. The land around the houses is level and easy to walk, a welcoming beginning for those who try snowshoeing for the very first time. With each step your confidence grows – and soon the wide fells call you further, where the horizon opens and the view becomes incomparable.

But the fell is alive. Its face can change quickly. Always watch the weather, carry warm clothing and bring provisions. If you venture deeper into valleys such as Nammalankuru, learn about avalanche conditions before you go.
Along the ski routes you will find simple shelters and wilderness huts – places where fire, wood and silence are waiting.

And remember: in the fells, mobile signal may fade, and the cold empties batteries faster than you expect.
Here, nature speaks in its own rhythm – walk a while with it.

The map also provides comprehensive information about the hiking network around Raattama, Kittilä and Muonio, as well as an overview of available services along the routes.

Printed hiking maps can be purchased from the Raattama Tourism Association for just a few euros.
